No more single-use plastics for Emirates

By Rachel Debling

Emirates has announced they will phase out plastic straws in favor of paper ones on all of its flights. The airline began this initiative on June 1 and pledges that all Emirates flights will soon be plastic straw-free.

As part of the carrier's sustainability initiatives, plastic swizzle sticks and stirrers will also be replaced with eco-friendly alternatives by the end of the year, and beginning in August, inflight retail purchases will be provided in paper, not plastic, bags. The airline estimates that these moves will prevent around 81.7 million single-use plastic items from ending up in landfill each year.

In another eco-conscious move, the airline has been separating large plastic bottles on board to be recycled, an effort that diverts an estimated 3 tonnes (approximately 150,000 bottles) of plastic from landfill each month.
