Air Transat adding provisions for pets in Economy Class

By Rick Lundstrom

Air Transat is now offering passengers traveling from the UK and Ireland in Economy Class the ability to take their pets in the aircraft cabin on flights to Canada.

Country-specific restrictions on traveling with pets: to Ireland and to United Kingdom cats and dogs are accepted as cargo only on Air Transat flights and advance arrangements are required and additional fees apply. Certified service dogs are accepted.

The airline says the majority of flights will accept cats and dogs 10 kilograms or less (including the weight of the pet carrier) on board. The animals must be kept in a carrier and placed under the seat in front of the traveler.

Passengers interested in booking their pets can reserve the service by filling in an online request form or by calling Air Transat up to three days days before departure. Subject to availability, reservations for pets can also be made on arrival at the departure airport. However, on arrival the number of animals traveling in the cabin is limited.

Passengers are not entitled to a carry-on item in addition to the pet in the cabin. The animal carrier counts as a carry-on item.

The price per flight, per animal in the cabin, is £58 for flights from the UK to Canada. A CAD $30 fee (plus tax, per animal) will be required for inspection by Agriculture Canada. All the details of this new service are available on Air Transat’s website.

All Air Transatflights include the added value of a 23 kilogram allowance for hold luggage, a 10 kilogram carry-on bag, meals and soft drinks on board, plus in-flight entertainment.
