ClickEat brings home-compostable serveware to airline cabins

ClickEat’s products are home compostable, designed to decompose safely in uncontrolled environments

As airlines navigate tightening regulations on single-use plastics and growing passenger expectations for sustainable service, Simplo’s ClickEat brand is setting a new benchmark with its home compostable inflight serveware.

“Home compostability represents the highest standard of compostability,” Oscar Herrera Varas, CEO of Simplo, tells PAX International. “It means that a product can naturally break down without the need for industrial composting facilities, which typically rely on regulated conditions such as controlled temperature and humidity.”

This distinction is critical for airlines operating across multiple regions with varying waste management capabilities. Traditional recyclable or industrially compostable items often end up as international catering waste and are incinerated or landfilled.

“ClickEat’s home compostable materials directly address this gap,” Herrera Varas explains. “They are designed to decompose safely in uncontrolled environments, breaking down naturally without generating microplastics or toxic residues.”

Developing the range required balancing performance with sustainability.

“At ClickEat, we always say we are an innovation company first,” Herrera Varas notes. “Meeting airline performance standards presents unique challenges: inflight serveware must be lightweight yet durable, heat and moisture resistant and safe for direct food contact, all while remaining functional in limited spaces.”

The company’s rigorous testing and certification processes ensure each item performs flawlessly inflight while maintaining its environmental integrity.

Intervine, a global provider of inflight product solutions, is helping bring ClickEat to market.

“ClickEat has a wide selection of clean, modern design serveware that feels sturdy and well-crafted to passengers,” says Jonjie Lockman, CEO of Intervine. “Their renewable materials are home compostable as well as industrial compostable. Even when products end up in landfills, they still offer a significant environmental benefit over traditional petroleum-based plastics.”

The lightweight nature of ClickEat’s products also contributes to fuel efficiency and reduced emissions—a practical advantage for airlines seeking both ecological and economic benefits. The product range includes cutlery, straws, plates, boxes, vented lids, bowls and more.

“Home compostable materials offer flexibility and break down naturally, even in less-than-perfect waste systems,” Lockman adds. “Products like ClickEat’s serveware help carriers stay ahead of regulations, reduce environmental impact and cut fuel costs—a win-win for the planet and the operator.”
