PAX Perspective Airline Review: Porter Airlines, PorterClassic

By Robynne Trueman in Los Angeles, CA, USA

In this PAX Perspective Airline Review, PAX Tech Business Editor Robynne Trueman evaluates Porter Airlines’ Porter Classic Economy Class experience on flight PD663 from Toronto (YYZ) to Los Angeles (LAX).

The first flight: I flew Porter Airlines from Toronto to Los Angeles onboard the airline’s Embraer E195-E2 with a seat in PorterClassic. Flight time for this medium-haul route is approximately five and a half hours, leaving ample time to enjoy the various complimentary services onboard.

As a frequent business traveler, I have flown this route many times with a range of carriers, including Porter. This journey, however, offered a different perspective. I approached each touchpoint with intention—assessing not just the logistics, but the experience itself. It was an opportunity to consider how Porter’s distinctive, elevated all economy cabin truly holds up from departure to arrival.

Boarding: Porter’s boarding process was efficient and stress-free. When it was time to board, I headed to the gate where PorterReserve and VIPorter Avid Travellers are invited to board first, just ahead of passengers in the PorterClassic cabin who were then seated by row. The process was handled quickly by the crew, giving a glimpse into the prompt service we would receive for the duration of the flight.

Seating and interior configuration: The E195-E2 features 132 seats, arranged in a two-by-two configuration. Each passenger is guaranteed an aisle or window seat, eliminating middle seat anxiety. I settled into window seat 10A.

The natural leather seats are comfortable with adjustable headrests and a standard seat pitch of 30 inches. With up to six inches of recline, I had plenty of space for a relaxing Economy journey.

Free inflight connectivity is delivered by Viasat through the Porter's web portal

Inflight connectivity: Porter Airlines keeps passengers connected with gate-to-gate WiFi connectivity on its E195-E2 routes, including this journey from YYZ to LAX.

Free inflight connectivity is delivered by Viasat through the airline’s web portal. Passengers simply need to enable Wi-Fi (with device in airplane mode) and select Porter Wi-Fi from the list of networks. Then, search porterwifi.com in the address bar. Once on the website, VIPorter Members are prompted to log into their accounts and watch a short advertisement, before gaining access to fast, free, uninterrupted Wi-Fi for the duration of the flight. Non-members can also view a short advertisement to receive 30 minutes of free access, which can be repeated throughout the journey. Non-members can also easily sign up on the spot for an uninterrupted connection.

This Wi-Fi really stands out for me because passengers can connect unlimited devices. Laptop, personal phone, work phone and tablet – everything can simultaneously access the Wi-Fi for a super convenient connected flow state.

Universal AC power outlets are available at every seat on Porter's E195-E2 aircraft

Power outlets and charging: For a five-hour flight, it was a relief to have access to power outlets so I could work on my computer. Universal AC power outlets are available at every seat on the aircraft, which is ideal for keeping personal electronic devices charged while enjoying the free inflight connectivity.

This really demonstrates Porter’s genuine consideration for its passengers in its all-Economy product design—for both the business traveler and leisure traveler, alike. Inflight charging is crucial when unlimited PED connectivity is likely part of the reason that travelers select the airline. This sentiment is mimicked again in Porter’s F&B offering.

The Cookie It Up Shortbread chocolate chip cookie is one of the complimentary snack options in PorterClassic

Food and beverage: PorterClassic fare includes complimentary snacks and drinks from Canadian brand partners. There were two inflight services during the journey. First service started about an hour into the flight, the perfect time for a mid-day coffee and snack. I had the premium coffee, a specially crafted cup of “Mr. Porter's Blend” from Montréal-based coffee roaster Café Saint-Henri. This paired nicely with the Cookie It Up Shortbread chocolate chip cookie.

On the second service, I opted for the naturSource Olio d'Oliva Premium Almonds and a glass of complimentary white wine, served in Porter’s branded glassware. This echoes Porter’s well-thought-out end-to-end passenger journey. Free beer and wine just taste better out of glassware, and as a passenger, it is fun to take part in the brand visuals that the airline is recognized for: The branded glassware and snack on the tray table with the window view in the background.

These details made me feel extremely well cared for as a passenger. The service is thoughtful, contemporary and genuine—not often the three words associated with an Economy Class flight!

The PAX Perspective: Flying Porter Airlines on this medium-haul route from Toronto to Los Angeles delivered an enjoyable Economy Class experience with notable perks like no middle seat, fast, free Wi-FI and complimentary beer and wine served in glassware.

The cabin crew were attentive, upbeat and helpful. Inflight service was efficient and the crew had a polished yet warm approach to communication that made me feel well-looked after at every moment of the journey.

As we touched down in Los Angeles, I found myself reflecting on how Porter has reimagined what an Economy Class journey can feel like. Thoughtful technology and genuinely warm service do more than enhance a routine flight—they restore a sense of hospitality to air travel that frequent flyers know is often missing. This is where Porter’s distinctive proposition resonates most clearly: delivering the sensibility of a premium traveler within an all-Economy product.

It is not simply about fast Wi-Fi or drinks served in glassware. It is about creating an office in the sky when you need to work, and a refined, relaxed space when you are ready to unwind. The result is an experience that invites passengers to savor the journey rather than count down the minutes to arrival. For travelers across North America seeking an elevated Economy experience, Porter continues to set a compelling standard, and for this, we highly recommend Porter Airlines.
