Finnair marks centenary year with 100 sustainability initiatives
Finnair is marking a century of flight with 100 sustainability actions. The airline invited its employees to share ideas on sustainability and received more than 250 suggestions on how action could be taken. From these, Finnair selected 100 initiatives that align with the airline’s environmental and social sustainability goals.
“These initiatives, implemented during the centenary celebrations, represent the small, yet important steps we are taking towards the next hundred years,” Finnair said.
One such initiative was the purchase of Finnair Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Neste in spring 2023.
The airline also installed solar panels on the roof of its facilities. In the summer and autumn of 2023, Finnair Cargo successfully installed 1,790 solar panels at the top of its COOL terminal, adding to the 1,200 panels previously in place. The company said that panels now generate enough energy at peak capacity to fully power the cargo facility and supply excess energy to other Finnair buildings. An additional 645 solar panels are being installed on the roof of the LEKO11 building.
Implementing circularity and sustainable practices are also part of the 100 initiatives suggested by employees and selected by Finnair to carry out. The airline is minimizing the use of single-use plastics and cardboard cups in its offices and on flights. They have replaced cardboard cups with previously used Finnair Business Class chinaware in office spaces and enhanced the processes for single-use cup usage onboard aircraft.
Uniform recycling is also part of Finnair’s 100 sustainability initiatives marking its 100thyear. Starting in early 2023, the airline began actively recycling and reusing cabin and ground crew uniforms. Uniforms in good condition were repurposed for the next user, while those no longer suitable for reuse are being recycled as raw materials for composite products.
The airline remains committed to achieving carbon-neutral flying by 2045.
