Cathay Pacific has reported its traffic figures for June 2023, revealing a remarkable milestone for the airline. With a substantial increase of 931.9 percent compared to the previous year, the airline carried a total of 1,548,571 passengers, reaching a new record for the number of passengers carried in a single day since the pandemic began. The recovery efforts to rebuild connectivity at Hong Kong’s aviation hub have shown positive progress.

The revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) also experienced a significant rise, increasing by 527.9 percent compared to June 2022. The passenger load factor reached an impressive 87.7 percent, demonstrating a growth of 20.7 percentage points. Additionally, the capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), surged by 379.6 percent year on year.

For the first half of 2023, Cathay Pacific saw an extraordinary increase of 2,230 percent in the number of passengers carried, alongside a 1,111 percent increase in capacity and a 1,685 percent increase in RPKs compared to the same period in 2022.

“We are pleased to see that our travel business continued to perform well in June,” said Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau in a July 14 press release. “We reached a new milestone on 25 June when we surpassed the 60,000 mark for passengers carried in a single day for the first time since the pandemic. We continued to increase our capacity and frequencies to cater to the strong demand for travel.”

Lau added, “Our long-haul routes popular for student traffic, such as North America, the UK and Australasia, all saw good demand.”

Cathay Pacific is optimistic about travel in July and August. They will increase flights and reopen more lounges, including Vancouver and The Pier in Hong Kong. Taipei and San Francisco lounges will also reopen soon.
