SSP publishes first Sustainability Report
SSP's first stand-alone Sustainability Report was released today, January 9 2023
SSP’s first standalone Sustainability Report, released today, announces key achievements from the financial year October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022.
Highlights from the report include a 36 percent reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions (vs 2019 baseline) and a Completed mapping of the Group’s Scope 3 emissions and development of its net zero roadmap, in line with a 1.5°C scenario.
“Sustainability is key to our long-term success and delivering our purpose to be the best part of the journey,” said Group CEO of SSP, Patrick Coveney, in the January 9 release.
The report marks an important milestone for the company since launching its new sustainability strategy at the end of 2021. With key focus areas including serving customers responsibly and protecting the environment, Coveney believes that SSP “together, working in partnership with our clients, brand partners and suppliers” can “drive positive change across the food travel sector.”
One of those changes is that 33 percent of SSP’s own-brand meals plant based or vegetarian. Also, the release noted, eighty percent of SSP’s own brand packaging is reported to be free of unnecessary single-use plastic and 65 percent of the tea, coffee and hot chocolate served by SSP-owned brands is certified to standards such as Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance.
“Our new sustainability strategy represents a step-change to our approach, and I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made in 2022,” Coveney said. That progress includes increasing female representation on the SSP Group Board of Directors by 21 percent (for a total of 50 percent), saving almost 400,000 meals from going to landfill via the Too Good to Go food saving app and holding partnerships with 27 charities world-wide, 14 of which are focused on alleviating food poverty in local communities.
