Japan Airlines has selected the R2 economy class seat from RECARO Aircraft Seating for its new 737 MAX-8 fleet, reinforcing a long-standing partnership focused on passenger comfort and cabin innovation.

The March 23 confirms that the airline’s incoming 737 MAX-8 aircraft will be equipped with RECARO’s R2 seats in Economy Class.

Designed with a focus on comfort and functionality, each seat includes USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports, allowing passengers to power personal devices throughout the flight. A built-in “Bring Your Own Device” holder is positioned for optimal viewing, supporting a seamless onboard entertainment experience.

The R2 seat also features ergonomically designed cushions and customized dress covers tailored to Japan Airlines’ cabin aesthetic. An integrated headrest enhances support, while the lightweight structure contributes to overall cabin efficiency without compromising passenger comfort.

Additional features include a generously sized tray table suitable for dining or work, along with dual literature pockets. The lower pocket incorporates expanded netting for increased storage, while the upper pocket maintains accessible organization without reducing personal space.

“It is an honour for us to have been selected by Japan Airlines for its new 737 MAX-8 fleet,” said Mark Hiller, CEO and Shareholder of RECARO Aircraft Seating. “We share the same values regarding passenger travel experience and passenger comfort. This is a testament to our long-standing partnership of more than 15 years.”

The selection underscores the continued collaboration between the two companies, with RECARO previously receiving Japan Airlines’ “Best Seating Supplier Award” in 2025.

The R2 platform has also earned industry recognition, including both the iF Design Award and Red Dot Design Award, highlighting its balance of design, comfort and efficiency for modern single-aisle aircraft cabins.
