Burrana powers up start-up airline in Hong Kong

By Jane Hobson

Burrana has announced that it has been awarded a contract from Hong Kong-based start-up carrier Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) for the supply of in-seat USB cabin power on its 737-800 fleet, Burrana's RISE USB Power.

GBA has applied to operate to a total of 104 destinations across the region, including Chinese Mainland, North Asia, Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. Critical to Greater Bay’s selection is Burrana’s ability to offer an easy installation with a light weight system.

"Our ability to meet an aggressive modification timeline of fewer than six months was key for GBA to comply with EASA certification to be able to start commercial operations in early October 2021," said Ryo Lee, Director Asia Pacific at Burrana.

"Founded by Hong Kong tycoon Bill Wong Cho-bau, [GBA] is run by industry veteran Algernon Yau, former CEO of Cathay Dragon," reads the Burrana press release. "GBA plans to have 10 737-800 aircraft in service by 2022, and more than 30 by 2026."

"We are very excited to be partnering with Greater Bay Airlines as they launch their new operations. GBA’s selection of Burrana confirms that our lightweight architecture, flexible installation options, and ability to deliver quickly are addressing key challenges that airlines face. We look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with GBA," said David Pook, Vice President Marketing & Sales Support at Burrana.
