Astronics introduce retrofit in-seat power solution

By Jane Hobson

Astronics Corporation has released a new in-seat power retrofit solution for airlines.

The EmPower® Xpress is designed to be attached quickly and directly to installed seat tubes and has an on-seat USB outlet housing solution that delivers USB charging options for aircraft in an overnight maintenance turn. There is option to fit dual or single USB outlet units. Installation doesn’t affect the seat structure or require seat service bulletins. The lightweight power solution meets load, flammability and weight requirements and minimizes tripping hazards.

Offered by Astronics AES – a wholly owned subsidiary of Astronics Corporation – the EmPower® Xpress expands the EmPower product line’s retrofit offerings, which currently fly on more than 280 aircrafts.

“Airlines have several factors to consider when retrofitting an aircraft with in-seat power, including providing a uniform passenger experience, compatibility with existing line fit options, efficient spares provisioning, common maintenance requirements and personnel training,” said Aaron Clarke, Vice President of Cabin Electronics for Astronics AES, in a release from the company.

Clarke added: “For these reasons, purchasing retrofit power from a line fit offerable vendor reduce the total cost of ownership over time. With EmPower® Xpress, we’ve made it faster and easier for airlines to execute a coordinated in-seat power solution strategy for providing the inflight charging services that today’s passengers expect on every flight.”
