Jetstar upgrades its 787 fleet with next-generation Viasat AMARA connectivity to support streaming and onboard Wi-Fi

Viasat Inc. has announced that Jetstar Airways has selected its next-generation Viasat AMARA inflight connectivity (IFC) solution to equip the airline’s upgraded 787 Dreamliner fleet.

The system will be installed across 11 aircraft as part of Jetstar’s cabin modernization program, supporting long-haul and ultra-long-haul operations with fast and reliable onboard internet.

Installation is already underway, with the first aircraft entering service earlier this month. Full fleet deployment is expected to continue through mid-2027.

The Viasat AMARA platform is designed to deliver high-performance connectivity for streaming, messaging and browsing, while also supporting future scalability through a multi-orbit network architecture.

“Jetstar is making a deliberate investment in the future of the onboard experience, particularly for longer-range flying,” said Don Buchman, President of Viasat Aviation, in a statement released on April 22.

He added that the system is designed to provide consistent performance today while enabling capacity and resilience to scale over time through integration with additional satellite networks.

Powered by Viasat’s Ka-band satellite network, the solution will provide Business passengers with access to inflight entertainment and Wi-Fi, while Economy passengers will be able to purchase connectivity options.

The platform aligns with Jetstar’s broader cabin strategy, which emphasizes a bring-your-own-device approach to inflight entertainment. Viasat says 94 percent of travellers prefer using personal devices onboard, supporting the shift away from traditional seatback screens.

Viasat AMARA uses a multi-network, multi-orbit architecture to dynamically manage connectivity across different satellite systems, helping maintain performance across varying routes and flight conditions.

The solution will also benefit from Viasat’s expanding global network, including additional capacity from ViaSat-3 satellites and planned integration with Ka-band low Earth orbit services from Telesat Lightspeed.

Viasat says the partnership reflects growing demand for scalable, future-ready connectivity solutions as airlines continue to enhance the passenger experience on long-haul routes.
