China Eastern Airlines announces non-stop Toronto-Shanghai service

By Tanya Filippelli

China Eastern Airlines and Greater Toronto Airports Authority marked the airline’s new service, a non-stop flight connecting Toronto Pearson International Airport (Toronto Pearson) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). Beginning June 25, China Eastern’s expanded service will provide more options for passengers and greater opportunities for trade and economic growth, in Ontario and Shanghai.

“I am pleased to welcome China Eastern Airlines to Toronto Pearson. By 2020, it is forecasted that China’s aviation sector will account for more than one billion passengers by air,” said Howard Eng, President and CEO, GTAA.  “At Toronto Pearson we are doing our part to attract and service this growing market, and that stands to grow with the addition of China Eastern.”

Based in Shanghai, China Eastern Airlines is one of the three largest airlines in China and ranks among the world’s top five airlines in passenger volume, carrying approximately 80 million travellers on 500 long and short-haul aircraft with a worldwide average fleet age of less than seven years.

“We are very pleased to have Toronto as our sixth destination in North America,” said Liuwen Tian, Executive Vice President, China Eastern Airlines. “Together with our existing Vancouver flights, China Eastern Airlines now becomes the first Chinese carrier operating from both Eastern and Western Canada, offering more than 13 flights each week connecting Canada with China, Asia and beyond.”

The new non-stop service will use Airbus 340-600 aircraft with a capacity of 272 economy class, 42 business class seats and 8 first class seats.
