Recaro and airberlin sign contract for fuel-saving BL3520 seats

By Lauren Brunetti

airberlin has ordered the Recaro BL3520 economy class seat, which stands out for its positive environmental characteristics, the company said.

The two companies signed a contract to this effect in mid- September 2013.

“We’re delighted with our long-term partnership with airberlin. This contract marks 20 years of cooperation in the short-haul segment,” explains Andreas Lindemann, Chief Sales Officer of Recaro Aircraft Seating. airberlin chose Recaro’s lightweight BL3520 seat for economy class to equip its future deliveries of B737 and A320 aircraft. Each seat weighs less than eleven kilograms, making it 30 percent lighter than comparable models. The Recaro model for short- and medium-haul flights thus results in a weight reduction of 350 kilograms per airplane.

“We are pleased to intensify our long-term partnership with Recaro with this contract. With the BL3520’s significant weight reduction and improved sitting comfort, Recaro is offering an outstanding product which meets our requirements exactly,” says Marco Ciomperlik, CEO airberlin technik.

The Recaro seat impresses by offering passengers more living space. They can enjoy more legroom thanks to its innovative features such as the high literature pocket and the slim backrest.

Recaro will begin delivering the seats to airberlin in April 2014. They will include several comfort features: in addition to the innovative netting material in the seat pan, thicker foam padding will be used in the seat cushion, which is designed for longer periods of sitting.
