Make room for retail, says consultant
The airport of the future will have passengers completing more of the check in tasks themselves to the point of even loading their own luggage on conveyors, which could free up airport space for more retail and food service options in the future, said a well-known U.S.-based consultant.
Speaking at September’s International Flight Services Association conference in Houston, Mo Garfinkle, president of GCW Consulting in Arlington, Virginia said much of the sweeping changes that could affect the airline industry in years to come would occur at the airports. “Airports are going to look very different 10 years from now,” he said.
Garfinkle said passengers would continue to arrive early to airports in preparation for their flights, increasing the dwell time within the facility to overcome the anxieties of airline travel. With many carrying more money, he said airport stand to gain much in revenue and will be though of by owners and airport authorities as “more like a real estate development project.”
