Emirates Catering gears up for A380

August found Emirates Flight Catering expanding its high-loader fleet and taking part in a rigorous series of tests in preparation for the A380 service in Dubai.

“This was one of the longest customer trials for the aircraft, and included taxiway and runway compatibility tests and ground support equipment tests,” Emirates Flight Catering’s Duncan Davis tells PAX International.

Last month, the caterer also took delivery of the first of its specially designed high-loaders that can reach the 8.1 meters to the upper deck doors of the A380. “All went well and we are well satisfied with the performance of the vehicle,” says Davis.

The company’s massive EKFC1 kitchen started operations fully in July of this year. Outfitted with monorail cart transport systems, bin conveyors, automated cart washers, food chilling systems and high bay stores, the unit takes up four floors and 55,000 square meters. The unit gives Emirates Flight Catering the capacity to produce 115,000 meals per day between the caterer’s two facilities in Dubai.

Recent Emirates Flight Catering Customers in Dubai include Delta Air Lines’ five 777 flights per week and three A340 flight per week from Scandinavian Airlines, which will start in October.
