LCC to fly in South Africa

The Financial Mail of South Africa reports that a new low-cost carrier called FlyMango will be taking off next month, launched as a separate legal and operational unit of South African Airways.

FlyMango is scheduled to begin service November 15. It will offer buy-on-board meals, quick turnarounds and other earmarks of the LCC model. Press accounts from the region, had sources questioning the airline’s ability to carry out the launch and criticism that the government financed SAA would indirectly compete with current private LCC competition.

SAA will be launching FlyMango with a fleet of four 737-800s. Nico Bezuidenhout, a senior manager in the sales department of SAA, listed as a director.
