Tamper-evident bags get TSA approval
People will soon be seeing a new bag designed to detect tampering and allow passengers to carry on duty-free liquid products on flights leaving the United States.
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration announced May 1 that the bags have been approved and must meet standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The bags may be used for duty free goods purchased in post TSA security checkpoints on flights departing the United States for international destinations.
The TSA stressed that the bags are for passengers who have bought duty free items in the secure area of U.S. airports. Passengers arriving from outside the United States can store their duty free items before their connecting flight. However passengers leaving the U.S. and making connections to another international destination will not be provided the same opportunity, as their bags are typically checked through.
The new bags now put the United States in alignment with European Union security protocols. “The use of tamper-evident bags is another step in harmonizing security measures with our international partners,” said TSA administrator Kip Hawley in the May 1 announcement.
