Perfume and spirits pile up at MIA

In a sign that the issue of transporting liquids and gels on aircraft is far from settled, USA Today of March 11 reported that from October to January, the Transportation Security Administration has collected more than 9 tons of bottled items.

The brunt of the confiscations come as tourists return from the Caribbean toting bottles of alcohol that the TSA deems a security threat, since the scare in London last fall brought air traffic to a standstill there.

The trouble comes when passengers try to make a connecting flight into the United States without repacking the duty free purchases. Passengers can only bring in bottles under three ounces in a clear plastic bag.

The issue has been a cause of the International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores. Michael Payne, the executive director of the group says in the story that the rules are still too new for much of the population of travelers in the region.
