New children’s menus on Lufthansa

A group of kids with the assistance of German television chef Ralf Zacheri have put together a whimsical mix of children’s menu items on Lufthansa German Airlines that started in May.

The new inflight menu will have Martian faces in the mousse, and strawberry puree. A “sweet butterfly” pancake is made with curd cheese filling and vanilla sauce. A spaghetti in tomato sauce with peas, maize and vegetables is known as “snake noodles in a tomato jungle.”

Six children had the privilege of working with Zacherl on the new menus. They received cooking lessons and a chance to be the official tasters of the new selection. Starting in May the meals were offered complimentary for passengers under 12 years old on all Lufthansa long-haul flights.

Lufthansa says that sugar is used sparingly on the menus and the meals are often flavored with honey. The carrier says it uses high-grade fats and olive oil and concentrates on cutting back on carbohydrates.

Lufthansa has been working on creating a positive cabin experience for children through its Lu’s World concept. Lu is a cuddly bird that is the mascot of the program. The airline has added toys, books, games and puzzles. A cartoon feature on the inflght entertainment program is part of the long-haul service.
