Smoking nixed on trains and ships
The smoke-out juggernaut that swept though the airline industry in the 1990s appears to be now making its way to other conveyances as well.
In July, the upscale cruise line Regent Seven Seas announced that cigarette smoking would not be permitted in any enclosed dining areas. Cigarette smoking will be confined to the designated areas of the Pool Grills and other open deck areas. Smoking has been banned in all stateroom suites and balconies as well. In a release last week, Regent detailed a number of designated smoking areas in each of its ships. Pipe smoking is allowed in several areas where cigarette smoking is banned.
In the United Kingdom, Virgin Trains announce that as of July 1, smoking at railway station concourses, ticket halls, all platforms and footbridges will be banned. Virgin manages 17 stations throughout its system. Smoking will be permitted only in the station food courts and uncovered station car parks.
For Virgin Trains much of the reason for the move was the result of legislation in the United Kingdom.
