Virgin America unveils product details
Should it get approval to fly in the United States, Virgin America plans a fleet of aircraft with a sleek looking interior sporting the latest inflight entertainment, class dividers and a mini bar.
The airline, still struggling to pass regulatory muster in the United States, posted a look at the interiors of its A320s January 17 around the same time as its LetVAFly.com website.
Among the early suppliers picked are new seating by Recaro, a mood lighting system by Diehl Lufthfahart Elektronik, class dividers by Zodiac and galleys and mini-bars by Driessen.
“We simply want to make air travel better,” said Virgin America Design Director Adam Wells. “Today’s airline passenger is paying for an experience that is at best tolerable. If we are successful, passengers can expect Virgin America to deliver future innovation that ensures the flying experience keeps getting better and better.”
At the heart of the passenger amenities will be the Red System of inflight audio and video. Passengers will be able to order pay-per-view movies from a number of studios. Virgin America plans 3,000 mp3 tracks for the audio and wireless Internet computer access for each of the passengers.
Passengers on a Virgin Atlantic flight will be bathed in mood lighting in color levels and tones that change over time. Economy class passengers will have individual 9-inch screens at their disposal with entertainment and games and power ports for computers in the 141 seats.
First class passengers will have room with a 55-inch seat pitch on the white leather seats with a variety of comfort functions. The dining table will have a book holder so passengers can read while eating.
Driessen engineered a custom food and drink bar in the rear of the aircraft. The airline’s branded suppliers will load the bars with products for sampling through the flight. The meal service will be ordered from the Red System entertainment screens “allowing passengers to order what they want, when they want it,” according to a release from Virgin America.
