Airbus Number Two delivered to SIA

Airbus handed over the second A380 as part of its initial deliveries to Singapore Airlines earlier this month.

The second aircraft was turned over in Toulouse on Jan. 11. Like the first aircraft, the A380 is in a three-class configuration seating 471 passengers. SIA says the second aircraft will be moved in and out of the airline’s route system and used for crew training.

When the third A380 arrives at the end February, Singapore Airlines plans to use the aircraft on its Singapore/London Heathrow route.

In other news from the airline, SIA began operations at the new Terminal 3 at Changi Airport earlier this month. At the airport’s new wing, SIA has a SilverKris Lounge and KrisFlyer Gold Lounge. The airline hired the architectural firm of Wilson Associates to do the work. The SilverKris Lounge is 4,000 square feet and adorned with marble and fine woodwork. Wilson Associates designed the lounge with high ceilings and full windows.

SilverKris is divided into first and business class sections, each with their own dining areas, food service counters, bars, television areas and washrooms. There is room for 410 people in the business class lounge and 131 people in first class.

The KrisFlyer Gold Lounges can seat up to 154 people who are members of the Star Alliance Gold club traveling in economy class. The lounge features free wireless Internet and a buffet food service.

Wilson Associates has been involved in a wide variety of projects worldwide including hotels and resorts, restaurants, spas, casinos, clubs, condominiums and private residences.

Late December was also a busy time for the airline’s catering subsidiary, Singapore Air Terminal Services. SATS reported that for the month, the number of passengers handled and meals produced reached record levels. In December 2007, SATS produced 2.33 million meals, up 2.7 percent. The company also handled 2.97 million passengers, up 5.8 percent from December 2006.
