Thai Airways opens halal unit

Thai Airways’ international halal kitchen received official certification from provincial authorities this month, making the unit operational and conforming to requirements for preparing Muslim meals.

The Islamic Committee of Samut Prakarn Province gave the kitchen its official halal logo on February 1. Thai Airways is operating the kitchen as a separate facility. The airline says that demand for the unit will be approximately 5,000 meals per day for 10 customer airlines.

Thai Airways operates service to several countries with a high Muslim population, including cities in the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Oman, Bangladesh and Brunei.

The ISO9002 unit is also HACCP compliant and was planned and built though an association with the scientific center at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. The facility currently serves flights out of the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, but the caterer plans to extend the service to flights out of the Don Mueang Airport which currently operates domestic flights.

Several regulatory authorities have approved the new Thai Airways allow halal kitchen
