Norwegian recycles cooking oil
Norwegian Cruise Lines is working with the Port of Miami and companies in Victoria, British Columbia on a program that recycles thousands of gallons of cooking oil on two of its ships.
The 1,300 gallons of used cooking oil thus far collected from the Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl have been converted into 870 gallons of bio-diesel fuel used by an organic farmer in Vero Beach, Florida, according to a release from NCL.
Elsewhere in its system, ships on NCL America have offloaded approximately 40,000 gallons of cooking oil in Hawaii over the last year. In the north, the cruise line provides marketable oil products to the secondary oil market with the help of companies like Peninsula Waste Water Services in Victoria, BC.
A full story on the cruise lines activities and the possibilities of recycling cooking oil will be in the September issue of PAX International.
